Susan Mayclin Stephenson Featured Artist for January 2017 As January’s Featured Artist, Trinidad Art Gallery is highlighting works by Trinidad artist and author Susan Mayclin Stephenson. The gallery is the only local source for Susan’s books on Montessori education. After many years of teaching parents how to share their daily lives, interests, and hobbies with their children in the most positive ways, Susan has written her fourth book, one she had been promising for many years. No Checkmate, Montessori Chess Lessons for Age 3-90 is welcomed not only by those who want to teach chess to children but also by many adults who have always wanted to learn chess themselves. Susan’s first book, The Joyful Child: Montessori, Global Wisdom for Birth to Three, has been translated into Portuguese, Japanese, and Vietnamese, and more translations are in progress. It has been used as the text for an online parenting course in Japan and has reached parents in hundreds of villages in Vietnam where families who live in poverty are learning, even with no material support, to support the best development of their children. The Arabic translation, still in progress, is already helping children in orphanages in Morocco. Susan has combined over fifty years of oil painting with her forty-five years of teaching and international work in education. When abroad, she creates sketches and photos of scenes she will later share through paintings created in her Trinidad studio. Although mostly known for her commissioned oil paintings of children, Susan has created beautiful art inspired by such places as Nepal, Jordan, Mongolia, India, Russia, Peru, and Morocco. Oil paintings and prints by Susan Mayclin Stephenson hang in homes all over the world, from Bhutan to Australia, from Holland to Japan. She has exhibited at the Morris Graves Museum, has been awarded Best of Show for the Redwood Art Association and has had two solo shows at the Westhaven Center for the Arts. Although most of Susan’s art is sold out of the area, she is always struck by the beauty of our own part of the world when returning home from her travels, so she enjoys creating beautiful paintings of local scenes. During the month of January, Susan's books, her Humboldt County paintings and those from other countries, along with reproductions and note cards with some of these paintings are available at the cooperative Trinidad Art Gallery.
